Museum Provenance
As apes, orangutans are among our closest relatives. Orangutans are also the only truly arboreal apes and cannot survive outside their rainforest habitat. Once found throughout much of Southeast Asia, they now live only in the lowland and hilly tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Mammals, which include human beings, are one class of warm-blooded vertebrate animals that have evolved and adapted to our planet. The Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History explores the diversity of some 274 mammals and how they originated and adapted to changing landscapes and environments over the last 225 million years.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
