Despite his remarkable resemblance to his Northern Great Plains cousins, the horns of this plush stuffed bison are soft and his weight is negligible. Museum Provenance

Though often called buffalo, bison are among some 274 mammals whose diversity is explored by The Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. You will find a bison in the prairie habitat in the North America Gallery. As running is a bison’s best defense, they are very fast speeding up to 55 MPH in their haste to escape predators.
