Museum Provenance

This Pecos Wallet is inspired by an object in the collections of our Museum of the American Indian. The vast assemblage of Native American art and artifacts of George Gustav Heye (1874-1957) form the cornerstone of the collections, consisting of over 800,000 objects, representing more than 1,000 indigenous cultures throughout the Western Hemisphere. The collections are distinguished by wood and stone carvings and masks from the Northwest Coast of North America; quilled hides, clothing and bonnets from the North American Plains; and, pottery, basketry, weavings, musical instruments, silver and turquoise jewelry from the southwestern U.S.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
