Likely acquired by Lieutenant Colonel George Armistead as a memento of the American triumph over the 1814 British bombardment of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry, the 30-by-34-foot Star-Spangled Banner was ultimately passed down to Armistead’s grandson Eben Appleton who donated it to the Smithsonian in 1912. The Star-Spangled Banner was originally displayed in the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building. Nearly 50 years later, this icon of American history was transferred to the National Museum of American History, where it is now displayed in a special, environmentally-controlled chamber.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
