Museum Provenance
The National Air and Space Museum has two public display facilities. The museum on the National Mall opened in July 1976 housing many of the great icons of flight, including the original 1903 Wright Flyer, Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St.Louis, Chuck Yeager’s Bell X-1, John Glenn’s Friendship 7 spacecraft and the Apollo 11 command module. Opened in 2003, the museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, permits the display of many more aircraft in an open, hangar-like setting. Included are a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world; an Air France F-BVFA Concorde supersonic passenger jetliner; the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and the space shuttle Discovery. In addition, the museum’s collections house hundreds of missiles, rockets, engines, propellers, flight equipment, instruments, scale models, uniforms and unique items of aviation memorabilia.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
