Bejeweled with Austrian crystals, this 18k gold-plated pin is adapted from a stately brooch created in 1967 to henceforward honor U.S. first ladies. 1 1/2"l. x 1 7/8"w.

Museum Provenance

The original is in The First Ladies Collection at our National Museum of American History, Behring Center.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.

My daughter is overtly patriotic and involved in veterans' organizations. The workmanship and detail on this piece are quite nice, making this is a gift that I will be pleased to present to her. While it is rather weighty, I am confident that she will find many opportunities to wear it. (As an added "bonus", her birthstone is emerald and this pin has a lovely green crystal eye.) One additional adaptation of this piece that would make it more versatile would be to include a bale so that it could also be worn as a pendant.
