This beautiful reproduction of Jackie Kennedy’s legendary Triple-Strand Faux Pearl Necklace carries 158 hand-painted, European glass pearls on hand-knotted silken cords. Believed to have been inherited from her mother, this necklace reprises one designed by one of Jackie’s favorite designers, Coco Chanel. The elegant rhodium-plated clasp with 14 Austrian crystals was designed to be worn so that it could be seen. The larger space between the inner string and the two lower ones was a Chanel detail meant to offer the sophisticated option of pulling the lower string up and over the upper one. Elegant presentation case. Certificate of authenticity.  17"l. - 20"l.

Museum Provenance

Like this reproduction Triple-Strand Faux Pearl Necklace, Jacqueline Kennedy’s fashion choices—oversized sunglasses, statement jewelry, a simple tank watch—were so stylish they are as on-trend today as in the heyday of Camelot. These signature faux pearls, along with many of Jackie’s personal items and gowns, are part of The First Ladies, an exhibit at our National Museum of American History.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.

Additional Gemstone Information

The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls used commercially today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the birthstone for June.
