This handmade Virgil Ortiz Long Dual Wild Spinach Motif Necklace was created for the Smithsonian by award-winning Cochiti Pueblo artist Virgil Ortiz. Featuring one of Virgil Ortiz’s signature motifs, the alternating openwork and solid leaf-and-bud shapes stationing this necklace celebrate the wild spinach plant Cochiti potters have used to make their distinctive black paint, while reprising a pottery design element often featured in the pottery Virgil’s grandmother and mother. Sterling silver with lobster clasp. Handmade in the U.S.A. Gift boxed.  1.75"l.

Museum Provenance

This chichi Virgil Ortiz Long Dual Wild Spinach Motif Necklace reflects the intensely graphic designs of all of Ortiz’s creations—pottery, fashion, carpets, murals, and now jewelry. Informed by traditional Cochiti motifs—especially as expressed in the pottery of his grandmother and mother who taught him their craft—the designs of Ortiz’s handmade jewelry are adaptations of Cochiti artistic techniques and traditions, which it his mission to help preserve. The work of Ortiz was featured at the Smithsonian in the exhibition Virgil Ortiz: La Renaissance Indigène at our National Museum of the American Indian-New York, The George Gustav Heye Center.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
