Museum Provenance
One of the highlights of a Smithsonian visit is the chance to see marvelously reconstructed skeletons of dinosaurs. It was during the Mesozoic era that dinosaurs flourished and, for reasons that scientists cannot agree upon, became extinct. There are numerous types of dinosaur skeletons to be found at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History: a typical representation of the horned dinosaur, Triceratops, which means “three horns on the head;” Diplodocus, from the auropod group of dinosaurs that were the largest land animals that ever lived; and Stegosaurus, whose tail was armed with long sharp spikes, an effective weapon of defense. A cast model of a Tyrannosaurus rex can also be seen in the Dinosaur Hall.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
