Museum Provenance
Our Division of Home and Community Life, National Museum of American History, Behring Center, includes the gilded copper weathervane The Trotting Horse. The mold for this weathervane was created by Joseph Fiske some time after he opened his factories in New York and Massachusetts between 1858 and 1861. By the mid 19th century, weathervanes were increasingly displayed on public buildings and rural area barns, providing vital information to help farmers plan when to plant or harvest crops.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
