This Jim Shore® Italian Santa is a folk art interpretation of an Italian Father Christmas. Re-imagined as a kindly 19th century Italian Sailor by American folk artist Jim Shore, this Jim Shore® Italian Santa wears a striped gondolier’s shirt, a brocaded vest and a country gentleman’s hat. In his right hand he carries a real metal staff crowned with a Tower of Pisa miniature; in his left hand, a basket of fine food. Collect this Jim Shore® Italian Santa along with the British, Irish and German Santas from Jim Shore’s Santas Around the World series. Hand painted stone resin.  6.875"h.

Museum Provenance

Jim Shore’s Italian Santa is inspired by a design or illustration in our Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, located in the Archives Center of our National Museum of American History, Behring Center. A vast assemblage of business ephemera, the collection includes Victorian-era postcards, greeting cards, letterheads, catalogues, advertisements and commerce-related memorabilia. Acquired by the Smithsonian Institution in 1967, this group of over one million items was the collection of Isadore Warshaw, a New York bookseller, who was concerned that the business community lacked interest in preserving its past.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
