Superbly crafted in chrome-finished brass, this elegant writing instrument is distinguished by its key-shaped clip with twin-fish bow. An adaptation of a 19th-century furniture key, the original secured one of the more than 1600 furniture pieces that first appointed the Smithsonian Institution Building, affectionately called “the Castle.” Emblazoned on the top with the Smithsonian logo, this sleek Smithsonian Castle Key Ballpoint Pen comes ready to write with a medium black German-made Schmidt ballpoint refill which deploys with a click for smooth and reliable writing. Handsomely gift boxed.  5.28"l. x 0.32"dia., 0.6 oz.

Museum Provenance

Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the 1855 Smithsonian Institution Building was designed by American architect James Renwick, Jr. to emulate England’s oldest universities. It counts among its Medieval-Revival architectural details a large circular window above the entrance facing the National Mall. Architectural windows like this date back to medieval cathedrals and were always placed high to catch the light.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
