Museum Provenance

Many people consider the P-51 Mustang the best fighter of World War II. Its combination of speed, range, maneuverability and firepower gave it great versatility. Its use in all major theaters of the war included long-range, high-altitude escort, strafing and photo reconnaissance. Originally developed by North American for the British, the Mustang was later ordered in large quantities by the U.S. Army Air Forces. A U.S. Air Force P-51D is on display in the World War II Aviation exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. One of the world’s finest collections of model aircraft and spacecraft is housed in the National Air and Space Museum.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
