The sunburst logo of the Smithsonian is an historic design derived from the 1683 family coat of arms of James Smithson, founder of the Smithsonian Institution. The alternating wavy and straight rays of the Smithsonian sunburst logo signify heat and light. In 1998, the official seal of the Smithsonian was changed from a silhouette of James Smithson to today’s logo of a stylized sunburst.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
