This adorable Plush Stuffed Hound Puppy thinks it is a hound, but it is not sure. Since this Plush Stuffed Hound Puppy is missing its mother so much, can it live with you? Especially if it promises not to pretend lick your face unless you want it to? Though a little sad and a little shy, all this Plush Stuffed Hound Puppy needs is lots of hugs and cuddles. Plush Stuffed Hound Puppy is made of high quality kid safe man-made materials—soft plush exterior; polyester fiber interior; lock washer eyes—and meets all U.S. safety standards. Surface-washable. Imported. Ages 3 and up.  9.5"l. x 8"w. x 10.5"h.

Museum Provenance

Charles Darwin saw domestication of plants and animals as a man-made analogy to natural selection. He reasoned that if people could select to perpetuate certain traits among the plants and animals they raised, nature could do the same. Dog breeding, for instance, shows how humans domesticated a wild animal and how much diversity can be generated in a single species by artificial selection. Domesticated from wolves 14,000 to 17,000 years ago, dogs were later bred to enhance their working traits, such as herding and hunting instincts, and then for their esthetic qualities. You can learn more about domestication in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History’s exhibition Since Darwin: The Evolution of Evolution.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
