Museum Provenance
There is only one family of Proboscidea alive today: Elephantidae, which has two herbivorous species, the African and Asiatic (Indian) elephants. Elephants are recognizable by their great size, huge head and earflaps, a very long, mobile trunk, bulky body and four pillar-like legs. Currently, the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park is home to three Asian elephants—females Ambika and Shanthi and Shanthi’s eight-year-old male offspring, Kandula.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
