Museum Provenance
The flight suit worn by astronaut payload specialist Jake Garn on NASA’s STS 51-D Space Shuttle mission aboard Discovery in April 1985 is one of many items of astronaut gear in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum. At the time of his flight, former U.S. Navy pilot Jake Garn was a U.S. senator (R-Utah) on the Senate Appropriations Committee and serving as chairman of the subcommittee overseeing NASA’s budget.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
