Museum Provenance

The steam locomotive, Southern Railway 1401 was built in 1926, and ran for twenty-six years. One of 64 class PS-4 engines built for the Southern Railway between 1923 and 1928, the 1401 could haul 14-car passenger trains and travel at 80 mph. The Division of Work and Industry of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Behring Center, includes a 4-6-2 “Pacific” type steam locomotive.
