Smithsonian Castle Window Cufflinks
|A Smithsonian Institution Exclusive|
Exquisitely worked in bronze and sterling silver, these Smithsonian Castle Window Cufflinks have been created exclusively for the Smithsonian by famed jewelry designer Cynthia Gale. A rich and unexpected pairing of bronze and sterling silver brings to life the beautiful tracery of “The Castle” window motif for him. Sterling silver rosette insets enrich the design. 0.75"dia.
Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the 1855 Smithsonian Institution Building was designed by American architect James Renwick, Jr. to emulate England’s oldest universities. It counts among its Medieval-Revival architectural details a large circular window above the entrance facing the National Mall. Architectural windows like this date back to medieval cathedrals and were always placed high to catch the light.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
