Mouth-blown and hand-engraved by Simon Pearce glass artisans in Windsor, Vermont, the face of this sculptural Smithsonian Castle Handmade Glass Clock was inspired by the prominent circular window centering the North front towers of the Smithsonian Institution Building, “The Castle.” Available nowhere else, this unique and eloquent gift is discreetly etched on its rough-hewn circumference with the Smithsonian logo. Battery included. Beautifully gift boxed. Handcrafted in the U.S.A. 3.75"h. x 4"dia.
Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the 1855 Smithsonian Institution Building was designed by American architect James Renwick, Jr. to emulate England’s oldest universities. It counts among its Medieval-Revival architectural details a large circular window above the entrance facing the National Mall. Architectural windows like this date back to medieval cathedrals and were always placed high to catch the light.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
