In the past I've bought numerous items from The Smithsonian Store. Generally, I've been pleased, and I looked forward to my wife's reaction when she saw this pen. She never saw it. And because of the reason for that, I'll have to think more than twice before buying from Smithsonian again. When the pen arrived, it was broken. That in itself is not a deal-breaker; it happens. However, the manner in which it was "packed" almost certainly was responsible for the damage. When I opened the box, the item was on the bottom. The "snowman" was sitting at a right angle to the actual pen, which was still affixed to the flimsy, faux-velvet backing. The two pieces had been "separated" at the soldering point (torn apart seems more apt). The small, flexible-plastic bag that held them was split completely on one side. There was no protective packing material whatever around the pen --- not under it, around it, or on top of it. A catalog had been folded and jammed down on top of the pen. Once I recovered from my surprise and disappointment, I realized that there was virtually no way the pen could have survived such careless and irresponsible handling. Needless to say, it's on its way back and I'm not getting a replacement, eliminating the possibility of being burned twice. I'm asking for a refund.

I gave this as a gift to my Godmother for her birthday and she loved it! Heavy duty pin, great quality, not cheaply made or cheap looking at all. I would highly recommend this product!

I have to smile when I look at this pin--the snowman is so happy! My sister loves snowmen, so I am going to give this to her to wear throughout the winter. The pin is well-made and adorable.
