decidedly NOT aquamarine. This pin/pendant has an unusual design and is quite large (for an "aquamarine") and is versatile (as a pin and pendant); however, the color (although a beautiful blue) is NOT aquamarine. It is not quite a sapphire or blue topaz color, either. I don't know anything with an equivalent color in the world of genstones. I wanted it to complete a suite that includes a ring and earrings, which are deeply aquarmarine in color. This was as "saturated" as those pieces in color, but it lacked that drop of green that makes aquamarine. Also, the blue "stone" in this piece is glass-like (maybe actually glass) and doesn't have the kind of sparkle a real gem or good simulant has.

I bought this pin over 20 years ago from the Smithsonian catalog for my cousin's 40th birthday in March 1990. It was so gorgeous that I tried to order one for myself a few months later and was unable to. I spoke with several people at the Smithsonian catalog at the time and no one could tell me if and when it would be brought back into production. I spent many years looking in shops and checking on-line for it without success. Finally about 3 years ago I was able to purchase one on-line. It was a beautiful and dazzling as I remembered it. I just googled it tonight for fun and was absolutely stunned to find it back in the catalog. This pin/pendant is beyond beautiful. It is a work of art from a time of untimate glamor long gone. If I did not have it already I would buy it immediately

There is a brooch much like this in the Royal Jewels. Theirs is bigger of course and real diamonds. They hardly ever wear it. I will wear mine qite a bit.
