Peacock feathers under glass. The shimmering design of this elegant Peacock Plume Letter Tray makes a pleasure of corralling jewelry, keys, guest soaps or hand towels. A rare combination of techniques (transferware and hand-applied foil) assures each kiln-fired glass dish will be inherently one-of-a-kind.  9.75" x 6.7".

Museum Provenance

In 1904 Charles Lang Freer acquired a London shipping magnate’s dining room—painted by James McNeill Whistler in rich peacock hues overlain with golden peacock designs—and moved it to his Detroit mansion. There he filled the shelves with the ceramics he had collected from Egypt and Asia. Painstakingly restored to its 1908 appearance (including ceramics), it is now on display at the Freer Gallery of Art’s exhibit, The Peacock Room Comes to America.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
