Musical Father Christmas Glitterdome®
Experience the magic of Christmas with each shake of this old world waterglobe. Inside, a richly robed Santa—encircled by a snowflake garland—carries a lantern and a toy sack. Outside, an elegant Victorian swag accents the resin base with the vintage look of tooled leather. This Musical Father Christmas Glitterdome® plays We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Brass-accented resin, glass. 5.5"h. x 4.25"dia.
The first known waterglobe—featuring the Eiffel Tower adrift in fake snow within a glass globe—was introduced at the 1889 Paris Exposition, where it became a popular souvenir. In 1927, Joseph Garaja of Pittsburg filed a patent to mass produce glass waterglobes. Soon his concept was copied and snow globes were sold everywhere. In the 70s, American gift companies began to create more upscale designs, often adding music boxes. A beautiful expression of this trend, our Musical Father Christmas Glitterdome® recalls holiday décor and music boxes in the collections of our American History Museum’s Division of Home and Community Life.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
