Dreaming of a White Christmas. One glimpse of this Winter Wonderland Plate and your heart will melt. With two ways to share the beauty of its raised snowflake motif—letting the design emerge as edible goodies disappear or displaying it on a table or mantel—you may need several, some for gifts and one or two for yourself. Frosted glass. Food safe; hand wash. 8.5"dia.
Wilson A. Bentley (1865-1931), a self-educated Vermont farmer, was so enthralled by snowflakes that he adapted a microscope to a bellows camera to capture images of these tiny beauties. His pioneering work in photomicrography produced thousands of pictures of different snowflakes and proved that each fleeting snowflake was a unique masterpiece. Almost 500 of these photos were donated to the Smithsonian by Mr. Bentley. Now curated by our National Museum of American History, these striking images inspired our selection of glittering gifts, decorative pieces and apparel.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
