Did you know that a young female goat is called a doeling? That there are at least ten styles of rooster combs? This whimsical guide to rural living, Farm Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of Country Life, by noted artist and illustrator Julia Rothman dissects everything from tractors and pigs to crop rotation patterns and tools. Paperback: Made in the USA; 224 pages with color illustrations throughout. 6.5" x 9".
Museum Provenance
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is home to an actual interactive farm exhibit. During WWII, Americans were encouraged to plant home "victory gardens" to ensure there was enough commercially-produced produce for our troops. That extraordinarily successful volunteer effort is acknowledged today at our American History Museum's Victory Garden, where over fifty classic plants and vegetable varieties are planted.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
