Though canine sculptures abound in various Smithsonian museum collections, dogs are also represented by specific American canine heroes. Our National Museum of American History includes Stubby, the beloved mutt who received many medals for his courageous service in 17 WWI battles. Our National Postal Museum includes numerous dog tags and awards collected by the Railway Mail Service mascot Owney, who first followed carriers on their rounds, then on trains across the country in the late 19th century.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
