How do I return an item?

Only items purchased from Smithsonian Catalog or online at SmithsonianStore.com may be returned within 90 days to the address below. Items purchased from our museum stores or our retail outlets must be returned to the place of purchase. Videos and DVDs may only be returned if in their original unopened packaging.

To return an item(s), please follow 5 easy steps:

  1. Place the item(s) (in the condition in which it was received) in its original packaging.
  2. Place packaged item(s) in the shipping box.
  3. Complete the return form on the back of the packing slip and specify the reason for the return.
  4. Indicate whether you are requesting a refund, replacement or exchange.
  5. Use the pre-addressed return label on the front of the packing slip and return the package to the address below.

For your protection, we recommend you insure your package for shipping. Additionally, please record any carrier tracking information to verify your returned merchandise reaches our correct return address.

Returns are normally processed within 48 hours of receipt. Refunds are made to the purchaser using the original method of payment. If you originally used a credit card for your purchase, your merchandise credit will appear on your card statement within 1-2 billing cycles. Shipping and gift-wrapping costs are not refundable.

If the returned items were a gift, the refund can only be credited to the purchaser. However, a gift recipient can return merchandise for catalog merchandise credit (which unfortunately cannot be redeemed online). To exercise this option, please check the appropriate box on the back of the packing slip and follow the 5 easy return steps listed above.

How do I split an order to ship to multiple addresses?

At SmithsonianStore.com, you can send gifts to multiple addresses by taking advantage of our multiple ship-to feature in the shopping cart. During checkout you will be shown each individual product in your order. You will have the option to send each item to the billing address or you may add an address. If you are registered on SmithsonianStore.com, you will also be able to select from your list of saved addresses. You also have the option to select what shipping method you want for each destination, whether you want to ship standard, FedEx 2Day or FedEx Overnight.

The Smithsonian welcomes orders from our worldwide customers via telephone, mail, fax and online. Our international shipping program provides the calculations for required duties and shipping costs for international shipments. How do I purchase/redeem gift certificates?

SmithsonianStore.com electronic gift certificates are available in denominations of $25, $50, $75, $100, $150 and $200. Gift certificates expire 12 months from the date of purchase.

Electronic gift certificates may be purchased and redeemed online only at SmithsonianStore.com. Electronic gift certificates are sent by email when the order is processed and may not be used with promotion codes.

How do I check my order status?

SmithsonianStore.com will typically ship your order within 24 hours. For orders placed online, you will receive an order number in your order confirmation. Please reference your order number when checking the status of your order. You may check your order status online by clicking on "order status" at the top of any page. Simply enter your order number starting with W and your billing zip code to see your order status. Unfortunately, orders placed via phone or before 9/13/05 can not be tracked using our online order status feature. I bought a gift membership, will I be notified when they receive it? Will the gift recipient know who sent it?

The gift recipient will receive a gift card indicating the subscription is from you. The donor does not get a notification from us.
