The mechanism in the original pen that was developed in 1965 for use in outer space cost over one million dollars to design. Its ink cartridge was pressurized with nitrogen gas. Even today, the Space Pen is the only type of pen that will work in extreme heat or cold, write under water and over most grease, and write at any angle. It has been used on manned space flights from both the United States and Russia.  3.75"l. x 0.4"w. x 0.35"dia.; Metal.

Museum Provenance

The original pens of this type used by the astronauts are on view in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
