Museum Provenance
In 2007, a collection of over 1,000 “picture” agates was gifted to our National Gem Collection. Agate is a form of chalcedony and is part of the quartz family of gemstones. Our agate jewelry exemplifies agate jewelry in the collection and agate stones in our Dynamic Earth exhibit.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
