Proudly display this hand-carved executive desktop model of the SR-71 Blackbird, a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance jet. The plaque on the wooden display stand of the SR-71 Blackbird Executive Display Model is signed by test pilot Robert J. “Bob” Gilliland who achieved Mach 1.5 and an altitude of 50,000 feet on his first test flight of the SR-71 Blackbird on December 22, 1964. This first flight of the SR-71 Blackbird was in Palmdale, California, where it was flown for 1 hour over 1000 mph. Gilliland was the first and principle test pilot for the SR-71 Blackbird aircraft series. As the SR-71 Blackbird program continued to grow, Gilliland logged more experimental supersonic flight test-time above Mach 2 and Mach 3 than any other pilot. The Society of Experimental Test Pilots awarded the Knicheloe Award to Bob in 1964 for his work on these supersonic secret planes. An exceptional gift for CEOs, senior managers, pilots or aviation enthusiasts, this highly collectible and autographed replica model of the SR-71 Blackbird Executive Display jet is hand crafted of solid mahogany. Scale 1:63. Ages 14 and up. 20.75"l. x 11.5"w. x 11"h.
No reconnaissance aircraft in history has operated globally in more hostile airspace or with such complete impunity than the SR-71 Blackbird, the world’s fastest jet-propelled aircraft. The Blackbird’s performance and operational achievements placed it at the pinnacle of aviation technology developments during the Cold War. On March 6, 1990, a SR-71 Blackbird was turned over to the Smithsonian after setting a speed record flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D. C. It is now displayed in the Boeing Aviation Hangar of the Air and Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center. One of the world’s finest collections of model aircraft and spacecraft is housed in the National Air and Space Museum.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
