Museum Provenance

Throughout the history of the United States, there have been armed forces which supported our country in times of peace and of war. In the colonial era, 1607-1775, a militia was formed to protect the settlers who had come to America. The Continental Army and Navy, both established in 1775, were integral aspects of America’s defense. With the increased complexities of fighting wars, the services in the U.S. divided into more branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and other uniformed services. Each has its own emblem that symbolizes the service. Military uniforms, badges and insignia can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History.
