Own an historical replica model of the bright red Lockheed Vega 5B monoplane. Amelia Earhart flew the original plane solo in a nonstop flight across the Atlantic on May 20, 1932, from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The first woman (and only the second person) to fly nonstop across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart overcame treacherous weather and wing icing to complete the 2,025 mile flight in 14 hours, 54 minutes. Her sleek, red Lockheed Vega 5B was the first airplane built by Lockheed and featured a fully cantilevered wing and a roomy cabin. This handsome and highly collectible model aircraft is handcrafted from solid mahogany and presented on a wooden stand. Scale 1:24. 13.5"l. x 20"w. x 12"h.
In 1889, then Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, Samuel P. Langley, acquired a model of John Stringfellow’s triplane to inaugurate the Smithsonian’s model aircraft collection. Since then, the Smithsonian’s curators and modelers have developed one of the finest collections of model aircraft and spacecraft in the world. This collection is housed in the National Air and Space Museum.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
